Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among adults over the age of 55, and many of these falls occur at night. Whether you're getting up to use the bathroom, taking medication, or simply walking through a dark hallway, nighttime presents unique challenges that can increase your risk of falling.
The good news? Most nighttime falls are preventable.
At Karma Rehab Wellness, we specialize in helping older adults throughout the Greater Houston area improve their strength, balance, mobility, and confidence through personalized mobile concierge physical therapy. By making a few simple changes to your daily routine and home environment, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling and maintain your independence.
Why Do So Many Falls Happen at Night?
When you first wake up during the night, your body and brain aren't fully alert. Your muscles are stiff, your reaction time is slower, and your balance may not be at its best.
Several factors contribute to nighttime falls, including:
Muscle weakness
Poor balance
Slower reaction times
Fatigue and drowsiness
Low lighting
Medication side effects
Frequent nighttime urination
Cluttered walkways
Improper footwear
Often, it's not one factor alone that causes a fall—it is several small factors happening at the same time.
1. Stay Hydrated—But Time It Wisely
Proper hydration is essential for maintaining:
Healthy blood pressure
Muscle function
Energy levels
Balance
Mental alertness
However, drinking large amounts of fluids just before bedtime can increase the number of nighttime trips to the bathroom.
More trips out of bed mean more opportunities to fall.
A Better Strategy
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, then gradually decrease your fluid intake approximately 2–3 hours before bedtime, unless your physician has instructed otherwise.
This allows you to remain hydrated while reducing unnecessary nighttime bathroom visits.
2. Don't Rush When You Wake Up
One of the biggest mistakes people make is jumping out of bed immediately after waking.
Instead:
Sit at the edge of the bed for 20–30 seconds.
Take several deep breaths.
Wiggle your ankles.
Allow your blood pressure to stabilize.
Stand up slowly.
This simple habit can greatly reduce dizziness and prevent falls.
3. Turn the Lights On
Many people try to avoid waking themselves—or their spouse—by walking in the dark.
Unfortunately, poor lighting dramatically increases fall risk.
Instead:
Install motion-activated nightlights.
Keep a bedside lamp within reach.
Illuminate the hallway and bathroom.
Consider motion-sensor lighting in frequently used areas.
Good lighting allows you to identify rugs, pets, furniture, and other obstacles before they become hazards.
4. Keep Your Pathway Clear
Before going to bed each night, make sure the path from your bed to the bathroom is free of:
Shoes
Electrical cords
Throw rugs
Laundry baskets
Small furniture
Pet toys
Even a small obstacle can cause a serious fall when you're tired and moving through a dimly lit room.
5. Use Your Assistive Device
If your physical therapist or physician has recommended using a walker or cane, use it—even for short trips to the bathroom.
Many falls happen because someone thinks:
"I'll only be gone for a minute."
Using your assistive device every time greatly improves stability and confidence.
6. Review Your Medications
Certain medications can increase your risk of falling, including:
Sleep medications
Pain medications
Blood pressure medications
Anxiety medications
Some antidepressants
These medications may cause:
Dizziness
Grogginess
Low blood pressure
Poor balance
Never stop medications on your own, but discuss any concerns with your physician or pharmacist.
7. Wear Proper Footwear
Walking barefoot or in slippery socks can increase your chance of slipping.
Instead, wear supportive, non-slip footwear that fits securely and provides good traction.
Avoid loose-fitting slippers or shoes that slide off your feet.
8. Strength and Balance Matter
Many people believe falls are simply part of aging—but they aren't.
Balance is a skill that can be improved.
The stronger your legs, hips, and core become, the easier it is to:
Recover from a loss of balance
Climb stairs safely
Get out of bed
Stand from a chair
Walk confidently indoors and outdoors
Working on balance before a fall occurs is one of the best investments you can make in your future independence.
9. Make Your Bedroom Safer
Simple bedroom modifications can make a big difference:
Keep a phone within reach.
Ensure your bed height allows your feet to touch the floor comfortably.
Place frequently used items nearby.
Remove loose rugs.
Consider grab bars if appropriate.
A safer bedroom creates a safer start to every morning—and every nighttime bathroom trip.
10. Know When to Seek Help
If you notice that you or a loved one is:
Holding onto furniture while walking
Feeling unsteady when getting out of bed
Avoiding activities because of fear of falling
Walking more slowly than before
Recovering from surgery, illness, cancer treatment, or a previous fall
don't wait until another fall happens.
Early intervention often prevents more serious injuries and helps people remain independent longer.
